Questions for whichever stop you are on, each with the working shown. Try the question first — the answer stays folded until you open it.

Stop 1 · Matter

A block has mass 540 g and volume 200 cm³. What is its density, and which common metal is it close to?
Show the working

Density = mass ÷ volume = 540 ÷ 200 = 2.7 g/cm³ — about aluminium.

Ice melts inside a sealed bag. Has a new substance been made? How can you tell?
Show the working

No. It is still H₂O, the mass has not changed, and freezing reverses it. A change of state, not of substance.

Stop 2 · Atoms

An atom has 11 protons and 12 neutrons. Which element is it, and what is its mass number?
Show the working

The proton number names the element: 11 protons is sodium. Mass number = 11 + 12 = 23.

How many electrons does a neutral oxygen atom have, and how are they arranged?
Show the working

Oxygen has 8 protons, so a neutral atom has 8 electrons: 2 in the first shell, 6 in the second.

Stop 3 · Periodic table

An element sits in group 1 and period 3. Which element is it, and how many electrons are in its outer shell?
Show the working

Group 1, period 3 is sodium. Group 1 means 1 electron in the outer shell — which is why it gives that electron away so readily.

Why do group 2 elements form 2+ ions?
Show the working

They have 2 outer electrons. Losing both leaves a full shell, so the ion carries charge 2+.

Stop 4 · Bonding

Sodium meets chlorine. What does each atom do, and what charge does each end with?
Show the working

Sodium loses its 1 outer electron → Na⁺. Chlorine gains it to complete its shell → Cl⁻. Opposite charges attract: an ionic bond.

How many covalent bonds does the oxygen atom form in a water molecule, and what holds them?
Show the working

Two bonds, one to each hydrogen. Each bond is a shared pair of electrons.

Stop 5 · Moles

How many moles are in 36 g of water? (H₂O = 18 g/mol)
Show the working

Moles = mass ÷ molar mass = 36 ÷ 18 = 2 mol.

How many particles are in half a mole of anything?
Show the working

0.5 × 6.02 × 10²³ = 3.01 × 10²³ particles. The mole is a count, not a weight — the count is the same for every substance.

Stop 6 · Reactions

Balance this equation: CH₄ + O₂ → CO₂ + H₂O
Show the working

Carbon is already balanced. Hydrogen: 4 on the left, so 2H₂O. Oxygen: 2 + 2 = 4 on the right, so 2O₂. CH₄ + 2O₂ → CO₂ + 2H₂O.

Zinc is dropped into hydrochloric acid. Name the two products, and the test for the gas.
Show the working

Zinc chloride and hydrogen. The gas gives a squeaky pop with a lit splint.

Stop 7 · Stoichiometry

Mg + 2HCl → MgCl₂ + H₂. How many moles of hydrogen come from 0.5 mol of magnesium?
Show the working

The equation's ratio is 1 : 1, so 0.5 mol of Mg makes 0.5 mol of H₂.

2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O. How many grams of water form from 8 g of hydrogen? (H₂ = 2 g/mol, H₂O = 18 g/mol)
Show the working

8 g of H₂ = 8 ÷ 2 = 4 mol. The ratio 2 : 2 means 4 mol of H₂ makes 4 mol of H₂O. Mass = 4 × 18 = 72 g.

Stop 8 · Gases

A syringe holds 60 cm³ of gas. The pressure is doubled at the same temperature. What is the new volume?
Show the working

Double the pressure, half the volume: 30 cm³. Squeezing the same particles into half the space doubles the hits on the walls.

Why does a sealed balloon shrink in the freezer?
Show the working

Cold particles move more slowly and hit the walls less hard, so the pressure inside drops. The outside air pushes the balloon in until the pressures match again — at a smaller volume.

Stop 9 · Solutions

25 g of salt is dissolved in 250 cm³ of water. What is the concentration in g/dm³?
Show the working

250 cm³ = 0.25 dm³. Concentration = 25 ÷ 0.25 = 100 g/dm³.

A solution is diluted from 100 cm³ to 500 cm³ without adding or removing solute. What happens to its concentration?
Show the working

The same amount of solute now sits in five times the volume, so the concentration falls to one fifth.

Stop 10 · Acids & bases

A solution of pH 2 is compared with a neutral solution of pH 7. How many times more concentrated in H⁺ ions is the pH 2 solution?
Show the working

Each pH step is a factor of 10. Five steps from 7 down to 2 is 10⁵ = 100,000 times.

Name the salt made when sulfuric acid neutralises potassium hydroxide.
Show the working

The acid names the salt: sulfuric acid makes a sulfate, and the metal is potassium — potassium sulfate, plus water.

Stop 11 · Energy & rates

A reaction mixture warms up on its own. Is the reaction exothermic or endothermic?
Show the working

Exothermic — it gives out energy to the surroundings, and that energy arrives as heat.

Name two ways to speed up a reaction between a solid lump and an acid, and give the particle reason for one of them.
Show the working

Crush the lump, warm the mixture, or use a stronger acid. Crushing works because more of the solid's surface is exposed, so collisions happen more often.

Stop 12 · Carbon

Balance the complete combustion of propane: C₃H₈ + O₂ → CO₂ + H₂O
Show the working

Carbon: 3CO₂. Hydrogen: 4H₂O. Oxygen on the right: 6 + 4 = 10 atoms, so 5O₂. C₃H₈ + 5O₂ → 3CO₂ + 4H₂O.

Why does graphite conduct electricity when diamond cannot?
Show the working

In graphite, some electrons are delocalised — free to move between the layers and carry charge. In diamond every electron is locked into a bond.

Questions

Why are the answers folded away? Because reading an answer feels like knowing it. Try the question first, out loud or on paper, then open the working and compare — the gap between the two is the part that teaches.

How should practice be mixed in? Five questions from earlier stops before starting a new one. The counting, weighing, and balancing from the early stops are the tools the later stops use, and they stay sharp only if they are used.
